Meehan and I go running as much as we can throughout the week to stay in shape. We often love to go in a neighborhood near the All Nations campus because the homes are very unique and beautiful and there are great views of the hills and the ocean. It is hard to go though without noticing the affects of the partied still. Although it is over by law, the residue remains in the clear geographic distinctions between the blacks and the whites. Nearly every neighbor like the one we run through is 99% white. 98% of all the blacks still live in the townships and in deep poverty. Only a rare few make their way up through what many now call economic partied. It is humbling remembering these statistics when we see how many blacks live in Cape Town. When we take our runs in the morning there is a long line of black people walking up the hill in the neighborhood making their way to go serve in the white homes. We also see frequently an African woman with a white baby on her back strolling to the store. Our personal favorite was the one with the baby in a ‘Western’ baby backpack she then wrapped with her ‘African’ wrap that the women all use for their babies here. These are all humbling reminders that reveal the painful past of this country.
