Adoption is a Sin

Adoption means you are a bad woman. There is nothing worse than giving your child away.

Imagine if I or anyone else said this to anyone, nonetheless actually believed it?

I, Meehan cannot speak for Africa as a whole but have learned while working with pregnant women in Capetown that this belief is attached to adoption. In my opinion, this sort of condemnation and pressure from a community would easily drive any desperate mother to aborting or dumping her baby {without ever considering her other options}. In light of this common belief, yesterday’s victory was that much sweeter.

Yesterday, I met with a young woman who phoned the Baby Safe while I was on call. I met her immediately as she said she just was not coping well with her pregnancy and did not want to keep the child.

In the course of our conversation, I explained to her that adoption is not a sin but rather a plan approved of by God, as He adopted us into his family through Jesus. As I spoke this truth, I watched her countenance brighten before my very eyes.

“I’ve just been a tired, lazy pregnant woman but now I am SO EXCITED about my decision {about adoption}. I have hope and I can’t wait to move forward.” She spoke unselfishly about adoption being a way that she could give her baby the life she never had. She simply needed to hear that she was a good mom and that the Lord was proud of her for making this phone call to ask for help.

Victory! Is all there is left to say. I am still thrilled as I recall yesterday’s events with this girl and I am thankful with all my heart to be a part of what the Holy Spirit is already doing in her life.

She is 8 months pregnant, I meet with her again this Friday to begin an adoption plan and I look forward to walking her through the rest of her pregnancy.
